When I first moved onto strength training at the gym as part of my programme, I was really apprehensive and couldn’t see how putting my body under stress like that could be beneficial, considering my spine surgery.
Alex had to convince me a bit that it was worthwhile, as I started off really concerned and worried that by loading up with weights, I was just going to damage my back more, and end up back in a position where I couldn’t do anything again (basically my biggest fear).
So, after some gentle persuasion and a really good trick to show me how I do those movements all the time, I came around to the idea and started.
Since then I’ve been amazed at my progress, and how much stronger I feel in a relatively short space of time. As someone who loves running, cycling and team sports, I also didn’t expect to enjoy weights as much as I have done, but it has been really satisfying seeing my numbers increase, and to have confidence in that part of the gym I’d only watched other people in before.
