JustGym fitness

For the last 3 months since I joined JustGym, I’ve gone to classes, had set gym programmes as well as personal training sessions with Alex, all in order to get myself in the best shape possible for the race which is now THIS SUMMER!

Because of this, I have landed in 2017 a bit dazed and confused from 2016, but the fittest I’ve been in the last 3 years, and encouraged by my progress to continue up until race start, all thanks to the support and friendliness of the JustGym team.

What I’ve discovered about my health and fitness since starting with a personal trainer is that I wasn’t really aware of how the operation had affected me in the longer term. Your body is very clever and will adapt where there is pain/restrictions, but in my case, that has meant that it has limited my range of motion. I had a bit of an attitude of ‘oh that’s just how I am now’, and had been quite scared to push myself for fear of damaging myself again. I’ve learnt a lot about this over the last 3 months, including how to improve my range of motion, and I feel like I have made a lot of progress. I’ve also remembered how much I enjoy exercising and challenging myself, and how much a good run around/gym session/PT session/yoga class clears the mind.

I’m definitely fitter – I can tell by how much easier I find cycling up the hill near my house, how much easier I find breathing whilst I’m running – but I’m also more focused. Having someone who knows what they are talking about explain how and why your body is reacting in certain ways to the stresses you put on it has been invaluable to get my head straight for the Summer, and realise that I need to keep going to be as fit as I can be, for personal and team safety on the boat, but also to get as much from the experience as possible.
