Last week, my family and I suprised my Nannan for her 80th birthday by turning up on her holiday in Alcudia! There were 28 of us all together and we had a brilliant week celebrating.
As Mallorca is a great place for dinghy sailing, I thought this would be a great chance to get a bit of practice in, whilst not having to take additional leave from work and at a more reasonable price than yacht sailing. So my Dad and I did around 3 hours a day for 4 days with Wind and Friends, based on Alcudia beach.
It was on the recommendation from a friend I made on Level 1, Allison, that I decided to try out dinghy sailing. She had advised when we met in the summer that dinghy sailing was a good way to understand wind and practice techniques on on a smaller scale, which you can then apply on the Clipper 68s and 70s – it was a good recommendation!
I found that a lot of the knowledge from Level 1 came back during the week, and a lot of things slotted in to place – on the bigger boats I found it harder to see how each task fitted together, whereas on a dinghy you can see really clearly how e.g. the wind affects the boat, and how what you are doing has an impact.
All in all, it was a great thing to have done, and has spurred me on for my dinghy sailing classes in London, starting next week.

Gulp.
